Good News Jail & Prison Ministry was incorporated in the Commonwealth of Virginia in December 1961 as a non-profit organization formed for the purposes of providing trained, ordained men and women to serve as staff chaplains in correctional institutions throughout the United States and abroad.
From its inception, the organization has been primarily funded by the gifts and donations of interested individuals, businesses, and churches, with occasional support from foundations and grants. Throughout its history, the Ministry has not accepted any financial support from federal, state, or local tax revenues, but rather has provided services worth hundreds of thousands of dollars per year, at no cost to the local tax-paying citizen.
Good News Jail & Prison Ministry is a 501(c)(3) Nonprofit Organization
At the invitation of the Brevard County Sheriff, there are two full-time GNJ&PM chaplains serving at the Brevard County Detention Center (County Jail). Here is a list of some of the things being accomplished locally by the Chaplain’s Office:
- The Chaplains, with the help of volunteer staff, endeavor to meet the spiritual needs of approximately 1,950 inmates and 250 staff on a daily basis at the Brevard County Jail.
- They have 40 weekly services and Bible study activities for inmates.
- In the past year, they averaged 40 individual counseling sessions a week and distributed almost 3,000 Bibles.
Good News Jail & Prison Ministry has continually ministered in our community since 1982. As stated above, no tax dollars are used to support this ministry. Each Chaplain is considered a missionary and as such must raise his own support. http://www.goodnewsjail.org/default.asp
